Talking mannequins, simulated medical emergencies and even a birth! Our latest After 5 at La Trobe University’s Bendigo Campus was certainly an eye-opening experience.

Members were invited behind the scenes to explore the newly redeveloped Health Sciences 1 (HHS1) building and discover how technology is changing the way our next generation of healthcare professionals learn.

And let’s just say, these aren’t your average training mannequins!

From talking and responding to pain, to being fitted with interchangeable limbs that simulate cuts and injuries, the level of realism was impressive. Students can even practise inserting cannulas and administering fluids through working IV lines, all within a safe, simulated environment.

We also witnessed a simulated birth, which isn’t something you expect to see at a networking event! It certainly gave everyone a new appreciation for the level of training and preparation that goes into a career in healthcare.

Guests toured the impressive new facilities, including midwifery and acute care simulation labs, treatment rooms and student learning spaces. It was fascinating to see the level of detail that goes into creating realistic clinical experiences and preparing students for their future careers.

But beyond the technology, there’s a much bigger story.

The redevelopment represents a significant investment in regional education, giving students access to modern, hands-on training facilities right here in Bendigo.

It’s an important step in preparing the next generation of health professionals and supporting the future healthcare needs of our region.
